Do You Really Need Cosmetic Surgery?

Each year, thousands of Americans successfully undergo facelifts to appear younger. Yet facelifts and other forms of cosmetic surgery are not for everyone. “Increasingly, people are turning to nonsurgical alternatives, such as chemical peels, filling agents and lasers to retain youthful appearances,” explains Dr. Roger Kapoor, new Dermatology Specialist on staff at Beloit Health System and NorthPointe Health and Wellness Campus in Roscoe. “These skin care services are less invasive and have little or no downtime for healing.” Here’s a brief guide.

Chemical Peel Treatments

Chemical peels, which are most commonly performed on the face, neck and hands, may help improve the skin’s appearance. A dermatologist applies chemical solution to the skin, causing it to eventually peel away and reveal new skin that is typically smoother and less wrinkled.

Chemical peels are most commonly used to reduce the number of fine lines around your eyes and mouth, and to treat wrinkles and age spots caused by aging, sun exposure and genetic factors.

Following the peel procedure, patients typically experience a mild sunburn-type reaction, and the newly exposed skin will temporarily be more sensitive to the sun. These effects typically disappear within days.

Filing Agents

There are several filling agents available based on the patient’s skin type and needs. Fillers such as Botox, Juvederm and Restylane are all approved by the FDA and can all be very effective in reducing wrinkles. They are successful in softening deep folds, filling scars, or augmenting lips and are very popular choices in improving a youthful appearance. There may be temporary redness or swelling and follow up sessions are recommended for continued effectiveness.

Lasers

The YAG laser is used to reduce facial veins and effectively remove hair on the face or body. High intensity light pulses are used to remove hair or resurface skin for softer, smoother skin.

All of the above options are performed in the dermatologist’s office with little or no discomfort and very minimal downtime.
